Storyboard Text

  • Toussaint Breda was born a slave in modern day Haiti, which was then Saint Dominique.
  • But my father was born free in Africa!
  • You're special. I shall make you my house servant and let you read and write!
  • He had a liberal master and was compelled by ideas of the Enlightenment.
  • The free blacks and the mulattoes of Saint Dominique shall have some freedom!
  • The French Revolution extended some freedom to Saint Dominique. This freedom was temporary, though. It was retracted in 1791.
  • You can't take our freedom! We're gonna revolt.
  • This led to the radical Jacobins ending slavery. Woohoo!
  • I'm a mean tyrant and I want slavery in all my territories!
  • Napoleon took power and brought back slavery. Boo!
  • I'm a great general. We're totally winning!
  • Toussaint successfully fought the French, as well as invading Spain and Britain.
