Storyboard Text

  • In the early 1900s, the United States was thriving. Then in October of 1929, the New York stock market crash caused national chaos.
  • One cause of the stock market rash was the over-production of commodities. Farmers thought that if they grew and sold more and more product, that it would end up being beneficial, but it was not.
  • Luckily, in 1933, Franklin Roosevelt came up with a plan called the ¨New Deal¨ that would attempt to bring the United States out of the Great Depression.
  • One way that the government tried to help was to enforce balanced budget. This meant that the money someone spent would equal the money that person would pay for taxes.
  • Because of the chaos, civilians called ¨Okies¨ lefts their homes for California to find work and start a new life.
  • One reason to move was because of the dryland farming and the effect it had on lands.
