Storyboard Text

  • Learned helplessness was first discovered in an experiment with dogs where two sets of dogs were given shocks and one set could turn it off but the other didn't
  • After the first set of shocks, the two sets of dogs were given another set of shocks but both sets of dogs could turn it off
  • It was discovered that dogs that had control turned off the shocks a second time but the dogs that didn't have control didn't even try which is also learned helplessness
  • The effects of learned helplessness can make people give up on their dreams and keep them stuck in a bad place, that they can get out of with some effort.
  • people who were emotionally abused as children can get learned helplessness and see themselves as low-worth and feel as if they have no power.
  • One way to combat learned helplessness is to do the opposite: learn to be optimistic. It will take time and effort but it will help in the long run.
