  • Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860. that's when 7 southern states left the Union to create their own nation.
  • In April 12 1861, Fort Sumter was attacked by the militia in South Carolina. It began the war, and 7 more states joined the confederacy.

  • General Grant was the Union General and known for successful campaigns and battles
  • The North had more people, transportation and manufacturing
  • General Lee led the Confederate and known for his aggressive tactics.

  • Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States. He was captured after the Union surrounded him.
  • The capital of the Confederate was at Richmond, Virginia. The capital of the Union was at Washington DC. they were only about 100 miles apart.
  • Battle of first Bull Run- July 21, 1861, the first battle of the war, and Confederate victory. Union soldiers were sent to block southern ports.
  • Battle of Antietam-September 17 1862, Battle with Union Victory. After the battle, president Lincoln gave the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves.
