Eddie's journey to heaven started when he saved a young girl, Amy-Annie from a falling cart. This resulted in his death.
When Eddie arrived in heaven, he felt like a child. This was because he was a child when he met his first person, the Blue Man. The Blue Man's lesson to Eddie was that everyone was connected. Just as Eddie going to get a ball killed the Blue Man, so too did Nicky's car key, which killed Eddie.
The second person Eddie met was his captain during the war. The Captain taught Eddie about sacrifice, and also told him that he was the one who shot Eddie's leg. The Captain gave up his life so that Eddie and his fellow soldiers could escape.
The third person Eddie meets in heaven is a woman named Ruby. She is the reason Ruby Pier got its name. She teaches Eddie that anger is a curved sword, and it doesn't help the situation. This is what allows Eddie to forgive his father.
The fourth person Eddie meets in heaven is his beloved wife, Marguerite. She teaches him that lost love is still love, it just changes form. Memories are how you still loe someone even after they die.
The fifth and final person Eddie meets is a girl named Tala. He finds out that this is a girl he accidentally killed. He is horrified at first, but Tala tells him that he made up fro her by protecting all the children at the pier.
Thanks to his five people, Eddie realizes he did a lot of good at the pier, and that his life had meaning. It allows him to move on peacefully into the afterlife to be forever with his wife Marguerite while he waits for Amy-Annie to reveal her life's purpose.
