Nullification Crisis: 1828-1833
Jackson became president and fired most of the federal employees, he decided to replace them with his own family members who supported him throughout his election. This system originated from the saying "to the victor belongs the spoils."
Jackson used his power to appoint unofficial advisers to have an unofficial cabinet. This consisted of family members, friends, financial supporters, and fellow party members. People got the job based on patronage rather than merit.
In 1832, South Carolina passed the Nullification act that threatened to secrete from the Union. Jackson passed the Force Bill in response that authorized him to use the military to enforce federal laws. South Carolina backed down once the low tariff was passed in 1832.
