James Cook was a British explorer, cartographer, and navigator in the mid 1700's
Cook was sponsored by and was captain of the Royal Navy. He commanded a captured ship in the Seven Years War. (1756-63)
On a voyage to explore new land, Cook discovered and charted New Zealand, Australia and The Great Barrier Reef in 1770.
Cook was also chosen to navigate and explore Antartica. in 1773.
In 1778, Cook was the first European to sucessfully explore and document the islands of Hawaii.
Because of his accurate mapping of the Pacific Ocean using the scientific method, James Cook is still seen as one of the most important European explorers in history.
