  • In Salem, Massachusetts during 1962, a group of young girls were dancing in the forest until one of the girls, Betty, "was frightened and then she fainted" when she saw her father leap out the bush. After that incident she laid in bed pretending she had been harmed by witchcraft (The Crucible, 142).
  • Betty .Child. Dear Child, will you wake, will you open your eyes! Betty, little one...
  • (Crucible, 142).
  • Gets out of bed, frightened of Abigail. Pg:148
  • You drank blood, Abby! you didn't tell him that
  • Betty, you never say that again!... All of you. We danced... And that is all!
  • Betty does not wake (The Crucible, 159).
  • Now, Betty, dear, will you sit up?... Can you hear me?
  • Betty! Answer Mr. Hale!
  • Betty wakes up as Abby is accusing people of witchcraft (The Crucible, 162).

  • In Arthur MIller's THe Crucible universal theme of lying is demonstrating when betty started lying due to fear of being acuused of witchcraft to lying for attention. Once she saw how much power and attention she had after confessing she began to take advantage of the village by accusing innocent people. Betty's lie of being bewitched started to come out the moment she woke up to accuse people.
