- Della and Jim go window shopping, as they dont have much money. (exposition)
- Della and Jim realize that neither of them have enough money to buy gifts for one another. (exposition)
- Della decides to cut off and sell her hair for $20 in order to buy Jim a gold chain for his watch. (rising action)
- Jim decides to sell is beloved pocket watch so that he can buy hair combs for Della. (rising action)
- Jim and Della exchange presents. (climax)
- Jim and Della realize the irony in the situation that they both bought presents for the other to use with what they sold. (resolution/conclusion)
