  • The narrator's love is like a fever that longs for what nurses it. He is angry his desire has not been fulfilled. He concludes that to have desire is to die, and there is no cure. He is going mad and isn't thinking clearly. He thought his love(partner) was beautiful and kind, but she was actually ugly and rude.
  • Shifts
  • The fever and nursing symbolize how the narrator feels about his love. The physician and prescriptions symbolize the desire he had not being fulfilled.
  • Title
  • The authors tone is longing, melancholy, distraught, mad, and upset.
  • Theme
  • At line 13 (the couplet) there is a shift from the narrator going form talking about his longing and madness to saying some bad things about his love(partner).
  • Judging by the first line, it can be predicted that the poem will be about the narrator's love being related to a sickness and he is longing for it.
  • The poem is about the narrator longing for his love who he relates to a sickness, and goes mad. In the process, he realizes his love is a bad person. The theme is love, longing, and madness.
