  • President James Madison left the White House on August 22 to meet with his generals on the battlefield, as British troops threatened to enter the capitol. 
  • I must leave to the battlefield. You must be brave and await my return.
  • Gather important state papers and be prepared to abandon the White House when the time comes.
  • I shall do so as I await your return.
  • The next day, Dolley and a few servants scanned the horizon waiting for either Madison or the British army to show up.
  • Make sure to keep an eye out for my husband or the British troops.
  • British troops began to gather in the distance. Led by Major General Robert Ross are coming to attack and burn down the White House.
  • ATTACK!!
  • Dolley had to act fast and grab everything that should grab.
  • The British are coming!! Save all the important things!
  • Even though the White House was on fire she was determined to save the portrait of the former president George Washington. 
  • Must save George Washington's photo!
