I am Richard Arkright , a businessman , I see an opportunity to make money in the textile industry.
As it was so big, it required power to drive it and a large space to put in: a factory. I decided to use water power. And the machine was called the water frame
I provided money for the an inventor who developed a machine for spinning cotton. The machine produced a better thread than existing machine.
In 1771 I borrowed enough money to open the first cotton factory at Cromford.
To attract workers, I built cottages close to the factory and people came from around Derbyshire. I prefer weavers with large families. The women and children (from age six) worked in my spinning factory
The mill was successful and I built more in Lancashire, Staffordshire and Scotland. From these mills and the patents I took out, I made a fortune.
