  • Mayella's Testimony
  • Mayella In Court
  • Tom's Relationship with Mayella
  • "Mollified, Mayella gave Atticus a final terrified glance and said to Mr. Gilmer, "Well sir, i was on the porch and - and he came along and, you see, there was this old chiffarobe in the yard papa'd brought in to chop up for kindlin' - Papa told me to do it while he was off in the woods but i wadn't feelin strong enough then, so he came by-" "Who is he?" Mayella pointed to Tom Robinson. Mayella accused Tom Robinson of raping her. In Chapter 18 page 181,  Mayella testifies. She is young and weak. Mayella's testimony is that she was on the porch and asked Tom Robinson to break up a Chiffarobe when he attacked her.
  • She testifies that Tom Robinson rapes her but then she says that she doesn't remember to good. "I don't remember to good, but next thing i know papa was in the room standing over me hallerin' who done it, who done it?" This shows that for all she knows Tom Robinson could have been trying to help her and that her father could have raped
  • During Tom Robinson's testimony he states that she ins't respected and says nobody ever calls her ma'am except for him. This shows that he is nice and friendly to his neighbors when even her family doesn't respect her.  In chapter 19 it states, "- did you ever set foot on the Ewell property without an express invitation from one of them?" "No suh, Mr. Finch i never did. I wouldn't do that suh." This shows that he doesn't just respect Mayella he is just a respectable man. Also,  Mayella liked Tom Robinson when he went to help Mayella on the night he "raped" her she hugged him around the waist and kissed him on the cheek (Page 193). This wasn't random though, she has walked him work many times like all the other kids in the neighborhood. So they were alreaday friends before that night so if he did want to rape her it would've happened a long time ago.
