In 1603, a new family known as Takugawa took control of Japan.
Japan ended up developing in isolation for 200 years but the drastic changes that took place in their economy caused strain on the Japanese making many of them poor and struggling.
People became extremely unhappy. Shoguns were no longer strong leader and corruption was common.
Foreign pressure was deepening the social and economic unrest. Then a revolt was lead and established 15 year old Mutsuhito, who later took the name Meiji, as emperor. He led a lasting reign known as the Meiji Restoration.
Meiji decided that change was needed. They studied other countries and their governments and decided to adopt a German style government. They also made the economy a major priority and ended many of the legal distinctions between social classes.
After much success, Japan challenged many of it's rivals such as Russia and won. It also annexed Korea and continued to expand all throughout Asia, eventually becoming the strongest power in Asia during the 1900's.
