Madame Loisel is a common woman, not very rich, but she dreams of a wealthy upper class life with maids and many dresses.
M. Loisel gets an invitation to a fancy event where the attendees have to dress up and excitedly tells Mme. Loisel about it, which surprises her.
Conflict (Man vs Self):
Madame Loisel doesn't have a dress or jewelry to wear to the event, and she is distressed. She doesn't want to look poor at the event.
I have nothing to wear!
Madame Loisel buys a dress with money from her husband, borrows a necklace from Mme. Forestier and goes to the event where everyone watches her in surprise.
Mme. Loisel arrives home after the event and after taking off her wraps, finds out she lost Mme. Forestier's necklace on the way back.
I can't find it!
Mme. Loisel buys a real diamond necklace to replace the lost one, and takes 10 hard-working years to pay it back, but when she sees Mme. Forestier again, she finds out the borrowed one was only paste.
I bought a fake and it took 10 years to pay it back!
