  • "We must all be alike. Not everyone born free and equal, as the Constitution says, but everyone made equal. Each man the image of every other; then all are happy, for there are no mountains to make them cower, to judge themselves against." (pg 58) This is a quote that was said by Beatty. This proves the government was trying to cover up how bad the society was by distracting everyone from the truth and trying to make them all equal. But, being equal  limits the  idea of individuality and freedom of expression.
  • Under Harsh Control of Government/Technology
  • Oh no! I've been caught reading!
  • "It had an Eye. The impersonal operator of the machine could, by wearing a special optical helmet, gaze into the soul of the person whom he was pumping out." (pg 6 ebook) The government in Fahrenheit 451 can look into an individual's information and invade their privacy. They also tell everyone what is right and what to believe, citizens either choose to conform or they are forced to. They saw that books would not help them so they decided to burn books to keep new ideas out of people's heads.
  • Dehumanization

  • "School is shortened, discipline relaxed, philosophies, histories, languages dropped, English and spelling gradually neglected, finally almost completely ignored." (pg 55) By burning books, the government is restricting the thoughts and ideas that could be flowing through people's minds.
  • Truth of World is Hidden
  • What's going on in Mildred's head
  • Reality
  • "Mechanical Hound never fails. Never since its first use in tracking quarry has this incredible invention made a mistake." (pg 62 ebook)  The Mechanical Hound is programmed to hunt down people who did things that were against the views of the government. It is a representation of oppression and control.
  • "The televisor is 'real.' It is immediate, it has dimension. It tells you what to think and blasts it in. It must be, right. It seems so right. It rushes you on so quickly to its own conclusions your mind hasn't time to protest," (pg 39 ebook) In this book, Mildred spends a lot of her time in front of the Television. She is consumed by it and its the only thing that keeps her entertained and happy.
  • 5:00 pm
  • 11:00 pm
  • "'Will you turn the parlor off?' he asked."That's my family.'" (pg 23 ebook) The truth is actually burned by society. Mildred and everyone else believe they live in reality when in fact they live in a superficial world dominated by television, government oppression and the media.
