  • Indirect Characterization
  • This quote is a use of indirect characterization. This is used to show how untrusting Scrooge is. This is shown because Scrooge does not even trust his own clerk. Scrooge has to keep his door to his countinghouse open so he can watch him. That indirect characterization shows how untrusting Scrooge is.
  • "The door of Scrooge's countinghouse was open, that he might keep his eye upon his clerk" (621)
  • Symbolism
  • Marley's chain is a symbol of his wrong doings. It is a symbol of everything bad he has done in life. Now he has to wear it and be tortured by it. Scrooge has a chance to fix his chain and change his ways but Marley is stuck with his chain.
  • "I wear the chain I forged in life I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on of my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it" (628).
  • Theme
  • This shows the theme of the story, the effects of greed. This is shown because people do not care that Scrooge died. Scrooge was greedy and cold hearted so nobody liked him. The only reason anyone would want to go is if lunch was provided.
  • "I don't mind going if a lunch is provided" (658).
  • Internal Conflict
  • This is an example of internal conflict. Scrooge was mean to his clerk and didn't want him to take Christmas off of work. But he let him except he said to come home early and was really rude to him. Then the Ghost of Christmas Past makes him feel bad and Scrooge wants to apologize but he can't right now. So it is an internal conflict for Scrooge.
  • "No I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just now. That's all" (638).
  • Indirect Characterization
  • This is a use of indirect characterization. This is used to show how greedy Scrooge is. Marley is telling Scrooge about everything he has done bad in life. Then all Scrooge can think about is money and business. Which shows how greedy Scrooge can be.
  • "But you were always a good man of business, Jacob"(628).
  • Symbolism
  • The Ghost of Christmas Present symbolizes England. This is shown because he has these two people hidden away and they are in poor condition. England did this to their poor people and they hid them away because they almost didn't except them.
  • "The boy is ignorance. This girl is want. Beware of them both,"(654).
