Storyboard Text

  • Hi, we are the time machine kids! I'm Amiella, this is my brother Phillias, and my little sister, Hatinka.
  • Yay! Big sista and bubba going to take me to mashine!
  • Are you ready? Let's go!
  • We'll let Hatinka handle this one.
  • In the old days, people used to grow cotton in the South. This drained the nutrients out of the soil, making it hard for next years' crops.
  • Wecome to the Second Industrial Revolution in the years between 1840 and 1870!
  • This is the North, where the 2nd Industrial Revolution began.
  • What does this have to do with soil? Well, since the North did not depend on the soil, there was two things: There was space to build buildings and factories, and the soil was brittle and unsuitable for plants and animals.
  • 2 0 1 7
  • Let's ask ourselves the real question: What can we do to protect soil?
  • Don't use pesticides! This hurts the soil and the plants, so if you want a crop, be careful!
  • Use no-till farming. Leave the crop untouched and a layer will form, keeping the crop safe over the winter. Then, all YOU have to do is poke holes into the ground at harvest!
  • But in the north, people did not farm. That is where we are headed next!
  • Remember: Soil can be very helpful, but don't treat it well and it can be very bad for plants! Try using the examples we gave you to grow your own garden!
  • Uh oh! We hear our mother telling us to come in and eat. See you next time!
  • Come in! Mac and cheese, everybody!
