"The animals had now reassembled in the wildest excitement, each recounting his own exploits in the battle at the top of his voice. An impromptu celebration of the victory was held immediately. The flag was run up and Beasts of England was sung...In the end, it was named the Battle of the Cowshed" (43-44).
"After surveying the ground, Snowball declared that this was just the place for a windmill, which could be made to operate a dynamo and supply the farm with electrical power. This would light the stalls and warm them in winter, and would also run a circular saw" (48).
"They were just getting their clutches ready for the spring sitting, and they protested that to take the eggs away now was murder...He ordered the hens' rations to be stopped, and decreed that any animal giving so much as a grain of corn to a hen should be punished by death" (46)
In the Battle of the Cowshed, a group of humans, led by the former owner of Manor Farm, Mr. Jones, attempted to retake the farm by force. But the animals were waiting for them. In the Civil War, the Bolsheviks (Red Shirts) defeated anti-Bolsheviks (White Shirts). The Animals were the Red Army and tsarists were the White Army.
The building of the Windmill in Animal Farm relates directly to the Modernization projects in Soviet Russia, such as the Five-Year Plan. The pigs built a windmill to modernize for their own gain but their plan keeps failing; just like how Stalin’s modernization plans failed over and over again.
The deaths of the chickens in response to their resistance to Napoleon's rule correlates to the deaths of peasant farmers who gained nothing but death and torture brought about from the resistance against Stalin and his governing. The working class in Russia was overworked and how people were dying of hunger while the leaders got more than they needed.
