  • Exposition
  • Conflict 
  • Rising action 
  • The people of the village are gathering for the lottery that takes place each year in June.  It is a clear and sunny day. The lottery was conducted by Mr. Summers. He begins to set the stage for the drawing.   
  • Climax
  • The conflict starts when Tessie Hutchinson finds out her husband Bill’s name was picked.  Tessie felt it was unfair because he wasn’t given enough time to take the paper.
  • Falling  action
  • Mr. Summers begins the lottery drawing by getting it organized.  Mrs. Hutchinson is arriving late to the drawing. The list of every family in town is put into the drawing.  Then the black box is placed for everyone to see.
  • Resolution
  • When everyone starts to unfold the sheets of paper to see who has the black dot on the paper and they realize Tessie’s name was chosen.  Tessie feels it is not fair.  People start to move to the pile of rocks.
  • The falling action begins after Tessie’s name is shown to the crowd.  Mr. Summers tells the crowd to finish this quickly. The crowd begins to pick up the stones and throw them at her. Tessie wants a redo but they will not do that.
  • As Tessie screams, “it is not fair”, the villagers continue to throw the stones at her.  They hit her right in the head. Old man warner pushes everyone to keep throwing them at her.
