Early Life of Ivan the Terrible
The First Czar
Improvements to Russian law
Ivan the Terrible (Czar Ivan the fourth) was born in 1530 in Russia and his parents were Basil the third and Elena Glinskaya. His father died when he was three years old.
The Russian police force
When Ivan was sixteen years old, he took power from the boyars (Russia's landowning nobles) and was crowned the first czar (which is derived from the word caesar). He also married Anastasia Romanov in this year (a relative of an old boyar family.
The killing of Ivan's son
In 1550 a new, more detailed legal code was drawn up that replaced one dating from 1497. Russia’s central administration was also reorganized into departments, each responsible for a specific function of the state. The conditions of military service were improved, the armed forces were reorganized, and the system of command altered so that commanders were appointed on merit rather than simply by virtue of their noble birth.
Ivan created a police force, the Oprichniki, dressed all in black, astride black horses, that existed more to crush dissent than to keep the peace.
Ivan killed his son in a subsequent fit of rage, which caused his other son to rule and he was a weak leader.
