Curses, why now!?
Now here is Ted. Ted wants to make his house bigger and make it look much nicer. However, he does not have enough money to do this.
Ted knows someone who is willing to lend him money to make his dream house come true. He goes to a bank, and gets a loan, and promises to pay back the bank what he borrowed. Since Ted has a job, he can keep his promise.
Or so Ted thought, because the day after getting his loan, he was fired from his job! What bad luck, now how can he pay off his loan now!?
Ted goes to court to file for bankruptcy, specifically Chapter 13 bankruptcy ,which allows him to pay less than he owes and he gets to do so in payments. The court allowed this.
I've hit a rough patch.
Now, Ted can keep his house and payback what he owes to the bank in payments
Now whether you are a top hat who made too many poor choices or a Corgi who just had things go wrong at the worst time, bankruptcy can be scary but if handled properly, can relieve you of debt that would crush you otherwise. Just remember, be fiscally responsible!
