June 1789: The third estate breaks away from the estates general and forms the National assembly. This is done so that the people of the third estate such as the bourgeoisie could try to create a new national constitution. They all took the Tennis Court Oath which meant that they would not disband until they formed a new national constitution.

July 14, 1789: The storming of the Bastille. This was a prison that the French people raided to get gunpowder and overthrow the king's troops. They feared that the Swiss soldiers hired by King Louis XVI would target the French citizens, so they raided the Bastille

June 20, 1791: After signing the new French constitution for the National Assembly, King Louis XVI and his wife plan to escape to the Netherlands, but are caught and forced back to Paris. April 1792: France declares war on Austria, Prussia, Britain, Holland, and Spain.

January 1793: Maximilien Robespierre takes leadership after the September Massacre, and his first action is to put the king on trial. The king is found guilty and is executed by the guillotine.
March 1793: Robespierre leads Committee of Public Safety and the Reign of Terror begins. This committee was to be the defense of France against external enemies. June 1793-July 1794: The Reign of Terror- The aim of the Reign of Terror was to eliminate internal and external enemies of France. Thousands of executions took place through the use of the guillotine, mainly the working class, peasants and bourgeoisie.

September 17, 1793: The Law of Suspects was passed by Robespierre and the National Convention. This was passed so that if someone is accused of being a traitor to France, they will be put on trial, and if they are found to be guilty, they will be killed.
