  • King/Monarch
  • Nobles
  • The Pope and his church are ranked as the most important thing in society and the Feudal System.
  • Knights/Vassals
  • Kings led armies of KNIGHTS and foot soldiers. They made laws, collected taxes, and encouraged trade.
  • Merchants/Farmers/Craftsman
  • In the feudal (in Europe and elsewhere), the nobility were mostly those who got land from the monarch and had to provide services to him, mainly military service.
  • Peasants/Serfs
  • There were three main types of soldiers during the Middle Ages foot soldiers, archers, and knights. The knights were heavily armored soldiers who rode on horseback.
  • Merchants deal with trade. That means they deal goods that they do not produce themselves, in order to get profit.
  • A serf is a worker who has to stay in one area. Serfs were the lowest social class of the feudal society. Serfs were different from slaves. Serfs could have property. In most serfdoms, serfs were legally part of the land, and if the land was sold, they were sold with it.
