Storyboard Text

  • The pamphlet, “The American Crisis”, was first published in Pennsylvania on December 19th, 1776. It convinced some soldiers to re-enlist but Washington still needed more soldiers.
  • In 1776 during the Revolutionary War, George Washington asked the influential writer Thomas Paine to write a pamphlet convincing colonists and soldiers to enlist or re-enlist in the army.
  • It’s almost the end of the year. The soldiers will leave when their enlistments end and we will have no one to fight for us. What are we going to do?
  • The Hessians are nearby in Trenton. We can fight them before the year is over.
  • If we win it will raise the soldiers’ morale and we can hope they will re-enlist.
  • If we cross the Delaware here, here, and here we can advance and attack from 3 different spots.
  • We will plan to cross late at night on December 25thand fight early the next morning. The Hessians will be drunk and tired and not willing to fight.
  • Men, we have a plan to fight. Tonight we cross the Delaware to Trenton where the Hessians are.
  • We will split into 3 groups. 2,400 men will come with me. The rest will go with Colonel Cadwalader or General Ewing from the opposite side.
  • The water is icy and rough. I do not know if we will make it but there is no other way to reach Trenton.
  • We can’t make it! It’s too icy! We have to turn around!
