  • The 13th amendment bans slavery in the united states and all of its territories
  • Setting
  • The setting takes place in the south
  • Evidence
  • Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.
  • Perspective
  • Abraham Lincoln liked the idea of this amendment but he wanted some democrats in on it also.
  • Audience
  • The North really thought nothing about it since all the former slaves were free there already,but they did hope that white and blacks could be equal even though it didn't go like that.
  • North
  • The south thought that having slaves/property become equals just like that was not a good idea and did not like it one bit.
  • South
  • Signifigance
  • Although the former slaves were free they still faced discrimination and segragation and had little rights some jobs opened up for them but they could not get them because nobody would hire them this led to the 14th amendment{hoping to make black people equal} .This also led to" Jim Crow" laws.
