  • The following day, Santiago trades a tenth of his sheep flock to Melchizedek for vital information about achieving his Personal Legend. Melchizedek explicates that Santiago must follow omens and gives Santiago two stones, Urim and Thummim, for assistance in interpreting omens.

  • While the woman and Santiago stroll through a market, the woman purloins Santiago's money when Santiago stares at a majestic sword and its scabbard.

  • While wandering around in Tangiers’ markets, he volunteers to clean the crystals inside a Crystal Merchant’s shop; eventually, at lunch, Santiago agrees to work at the Crystal Merchant's shop.

  • After a year, Santiago holds enough money to repurchase sheep and return to the lifestyle of a shepherd. However, Santiago endures a troublesome dilemma when he inspects Urim and Thummim and eventually decides to continue pursuing his Personal Legend.
  • Santiago joins a caravan trekking to Egypt and meets the Englishman; the Englishman introduces Santiago to alchemy and expresses his desire to meet an Alchemist to transform lead into gold. The two individuals develop a friendship.
  • The caravan halts at the Al-Fayoum Oasis, the residency of the Alchemist. The Englishman and Santiago search for the Alchemist; however, when Santiago asks a girl for assistance, he becomes instantaneously in love with her.
