  • Long Term Causes of Revolution
  • Estates General
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • During the 1700's, in France, peasants made up 98% of the population. They belonged to the 3rd estate: members of the 3rd estate had to pay heavy taxes along with getting paid the least out of all of them. A huge problem was that the 1st estate(richest) and second estate(level below) did not pay taxes, but they spent a lot of money, especially King Louis XIV. Deficit spending started appearing more and more, sending the country into far debt.
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • The Estates General was a legislative body made up of representatives of the 3 estates. Due to deficit spending, the king hired Jacques Necker to take charge of the money. He told the king to stop throwing extravagant parties, and to tax the other 2 estates, not just the third estate. Members of the 1st and 2nd estate were not very happy with this statement so they forced King Louis XVI to fire him.
  • Revolution
  • The Tennis Court Oath was when hundreds of members of the 3rd estate, came together and formed their own leadership, the National Assembly. Members went to the meeting hall to talk about their plans, but King Louis found out and and had the doors locked. They walked to a nearby local tennis court and sign their pledge:  "we will never separate and to meet wherever"the circumstances might require until we have established a sound and just constitution."
