Montag meets Clarisse. She makes him think about how their society really limits the people's ability to think for themselves. She is enlightened in a sense and helps "enlighten" Montag.
Montag watches as a woman chooses to die with her books. He steals some books and takes them home.
Montag starts reading the books and then remembers about a man he met who used to be an English professor named Faber.
He brings the books to Faber's house and the men devise a plan to kill all the firemen. Faber gives Montag an earpiece that allows both men to hear what the other is saying regardless of distance. Later, Montag goes to work as a fireman and when they pull up to the house they will burn down, it is Montag's
Montag burns his house and the books within it. After the whole ordeal, Beatty confronts Montag, takes out his earpiece and threatens to kill Faber. Montag takes out his flamethrower and kills Beatty.
Montag becomes a wanted man and runs to the river and floats downstream. There he meets several people who have all read books and fled. They tell Montag of their plan to remember all that they read and tell that too their children and when the society they are living in falls, they will rewrite the books. Meanwhile, war is declared and the city Montag was living in gets blown up.
