Atop a roof a sniper lay with his rifle next to him. He was in the middle of a civil war between republicans and Free Staters. He is In Dublin, Ireland in the 1920's and is being fired at by the enemy, and has to come up with a plan to escape.
Our main character in "The Sniper" by Liam O'Flaherty is a republican sniper. He is fighting in the Irish civil war which took place in 1922-1923. Our main character is very smart and witty and is able to outsmart his enemy using his smarts.
The main character is being fired at by the enemy and is wounded while peeking over trying to take a shot. The wound was in his arm making it impossible for him to use his rifle. This forces him to have to shoot his pistol which is not very effective at close range. He will have to get closer to be able to get a shot.
After being wounded the sniper put his cap on the end of his rifle to make it look like a head. Then he rose his rifle in the air so that it was visible from the other rooftop. The enemy fired at the hat and his plan worked. He had made the enemy think he was dead.
Hooray I killed him!
Following this he waited for a shot with his revolver. Since the enemy thought he was dead he was able to get much cleaner shot. He lined up his shot and fired. He had killed the enemy and his plan was successful, but he was interested in seeing the identity of the other soldier so he ventured over to see who it was. The soldier ended up being his own brother.
The theme of the sniper is that war ends up making people targets. They do not have an identity they are just something that you are shooting at to kill.
