  • One day in the land of Ithaca, there was a King named Odysseus who at one point left home to fight in the Trojan War, and had to say goodbye to his wife Penelope.

  • After 10 years, the Trojan War ended. But Odysseus never returned home, leaving Penelope with their son Telemachus.

  • With Odysseus gone for so long, suitors came to the castle trying to marry Penelope, and the suitors were just feasting on Odysseus' livestock. Telemachus was a bit timid when around the suitors.

  • The goddess Athena felt bad for Telemachus so she went down to the castle to meet with Telemachus. Disguised "she seemed the stranger Mentes, a Taphian leader" (3).

  • Athena was treated with hospitality from Telemachus and after that, she gave Telemachus the idea that he could hold a meeting the next morning to tell the suitors to leave.
  • "Tomorrow, summoning to an assembly the Achaean lords, announce your will to all and call the gods to witness! Bid the suitors all disperse, each to his own" (7).
  • The next day, Telemachus had the assembly and during it, he insulted the suitors. After planning with Athena, she and Telemachus went on a ship to sail out to Pylos and Sparta in search of Odysseus. So through the night and early dawn did the ship cleave her way" (22).
