Importance of Long Horns
Life in the oil fields
Railroads and Farmers
Texas longhorns were extremely well suited for life in Texas. They thrive on native grasses and can endure hot and cold weather. They were also immune to the Texas Fever. Their long legs allowed them to travel great distances and their horn protected them from predators.
Gambling and drinking made it dangerous to live there and the streets were dirt so when it rained everything was muddy. Most of everything was always dirty and the oil field workers lived in tents or wood shacks.
Railroads were a cheap easy way to ship cotton to national markets. Railroads als opened up new areas to commercial farming. Railroad companies offered cheap rates and made large cotton loading platforms at each stop.
