We are introduced to our narrator, a six year old boy, who wants nothing more than a little brother. As well as the boys mom, father, and aunt. this all occurred during WWI on a Farm.
The narrators little brother doodle is born with disabilities and health conditions . the narrator is unable to accept his brother and his physical challenges
the narrator starts teaching doodle to walk that way he can be more "normal" just like the other kids. after family witnesses a birds death the only person that cares for the bird is doodle because doodle sees the bird as an outsider like himself so he then buries him.
"It's strange that all this is so clear to me, now that time has had its way. But sometimes (like right now) I sit in the cool green parlor, and I remember Doodle."

after realizing how cruel he was, the brother throws himself on Doodle accepting what has happened
The brother, now an adult, hints at the fact that his younger brother Doodle has passed away and at this point in his life, he realizes his self pride and actions have killed doodle
