A man named Chandragupta Muarya created an army. He kills the unliked Nanda King and claimed the throne. This is how the Mauryan Dynasty began.
Asoka , Chandragupta Maurya's grandson became the greatest leader of the empire. He fought in a war against a kingdom named Kalinga. He felt sad about all the people that had died, so he decided to rule by the teachings of Buddhism. He built stone pillars throughout the empire with edicts on them. He made sure that the kingdom lived by the laws of Dharma. Dharma are buddhist teachings.

Asoka also had roads built across his kingdom so he could visit the far reaches of India.
In Buddhism monks and Nuns were called missionaries. They stayed in places that were named monasteries. After Siddharthas death missionaries spread Buddhism over large parts of Asia.
Places like Kapilavastu, Siddhartha's birthplace have become important places for Buddhists to travel on pilgrimages
Another sacred spot for pilgrimages are the stupas. The Stupas are sacred mounds that contain the Buddha's relics.
