Sadistic Personality Disorder
A person with a sadistic personality disorder thrives on the pain of others. This person has a lack of empathy for others, and is vicious and degrading towards others. A sadistic person is cruel and manipulates others through fear and violence. They are willing to do whatever it takes to assume the dominate position and get want they want.

Facts 1) This behavior can be seen in all settings in personal and social situations, and tends to be more males than females who are sadistic. 2) This type of person takes pleasure in psychological and physical suffering of others, including animals. 3) Treatment for this personality disorder takes a long time, since the behaviors have been present for many years. 4) Possible treatment is through counseling and psychotherapy. 5) Pharmacotherapy (drug treatment) can have limited effects, since drug use can be misused.
Roger in the Lord of the Flies, clearly is sadistic.
Quotes 1) Roger was excited and derived pleasure with fighting. He said, “You want a pig, like a real hunt.” (p. 115). Roger demonstrated the pleasure in physical suffering of others and animals, which is a trait of a Sadistic Personality Disorder. 2) Roger chanted “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!” (p. 152). This shows his excitement and pleasure with cruelty and vicious ways. This is another characteristic of a Sadistic Personality Disorder. 3)Roger approached the chief, and he was asked to halt. Roger said, “You couldn’t stop me coming if I wanted.” (p. 159). This shows the need to feel superior and to be in charge. This is another characteristic of a Sadistic Personality Disorder.
Myths 1) Some believe a sadistic person’s motivation is supposedly unconscious due to underlying issues or concerns). Actually, this type of person is aware, has insight of actions, and is proud of his/her actions from the beginning. 2) Many have believed that Sadistic Personality Disordered persons are this way is because of having deep issues, and feelings of inferiority from abuse or neglect as a child. Actually, there is evidence suggesting that these personality disorders do not come strictly from this type of background. Yes, it may apply to some, but definitely not all persons with personality disorders. 3) Many believe that Sadistic Personality Disordered people have a low self-esteem. Actually, many of these persons have remarkable backgrounds.
