  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • The scarlet ibis is a symbol for something coming so far, trying to survive, then ending up dead in the end.
  • Theme
  • The coffin that was in the barn was a symbol for Doodle. He avoided death when he was a baby and he was afraid to touch it because it might bring death back into his life.
  • Dynamic Character
  • Imagery is an explanation in deep detail of a place or time. This story has imagery in the 1st paragraph on page 350. "Summer was dead but autumn had not yet been born." and "Iron weeds grew among the the purple phlox."
  • Personal Reaction
  • The theme of the story is if you set your mind to something, you can do anything. This is the theme because Doodle did not know how to walk or anything, then he learned how. In the text "I just can't do it." Then later in the text "There wasn't a sound as doodle walked slowly across the room." so Doodle goes from not believing he can do it, then he trusts himself and does it.
  • I think that Doodle's brother is a dynamic character. I think this because his brother was mean to him and did not like him. Then he wanted to teach doodle how to walk, run climb and other activities.
  • The story made me feel sad because of Doodle's death. Doodle had come from not being able to do anything to learning and doing a lot. He fell down on a run and his brother left him, and Doodle died. For that I think the narrator is a bad brother for leaving him. The narrator is partly a good brother for teaching him things Doodle thought he could never do.
