Cortes and the Tlaxcalans defeated the spainsh who came to arrest Cortes the survivors joined Cortes increasing the size of his army.When Cortes returned to tenochititlan he ordered Moctezuma to tell his people to let his men go.The Aztec threw stones at Moctezuma killing him.Cuitahuac was elected the new emperor and he continued the attack. In june 1520 the spanish tried to escape with gold they stolen but the Aztec found them and killed them 700 spanish were killed and 2000-3000 Tlaxcalans were killed.

As Cortes and his allies retreated to Tlaxcala to recover the aztec started to die off over half the population had died in a five month time span due to smallpox.Most europeans who had smallpox had a immunity but the Aztec did not as they were newly exposed to the disease.Cuitlahuac also died from the smallpox his cousin Cuauhtemoc was elected the new emperor.
AN UNFORESEEN ENEMY
After regrouping Cortes came back to Tenochtitlan with his allies and the worriors of texcoco who had once been part of the triple alliance.They turned against the aztec because they saw how strong the spanish were.With no allies and half the population dead the Aztec had a hard time defending the siege.The aztec lasted 75 days.Cortes blocked canals causeways and aqueducts. Many died from hunger and contaminated water. On August 13, 1521 the aztec surrendered and Cuahtemoc was hanged. The Aztec empire was no more.
