  • Name seven Continents.
  •  Back when Mrs. Woo was still in china, there had been many losses through her life.  Now in America she believes that you can be anything you want, and how Jing-Mei; her daugther should take advantage of that.
  • Jing-mei's mother imagined her being a prodigy child, she had very high expectation for her. She thought her daughter could be the next Chinese Shirley Temple.
  • But after the incident with the narrator and her hair. The Mother realized that her Shirley Temple dream was over. Since Mrs. Woo cleaned houses for a living, she would come back with magazines. This gave her an idea, that her daughter could become a genius by answering question or reading parts of the bible.

  • i'm so sorry mom...
  • Jing-Mei started to rebel against her mother's dreams. She didn't believe that she could be a genius, he mother believed in the opposite, she said if you actually try then your dreams can come true. Jing-Mei  yelled "Stop trying to make me something I'm not!!"
  • I don't know who i want to be anymore. The daughter that obeys, or the one that follows her heart...
  • While watching t.v. Mr. Woo saw a little Chinese girl playing the piano, that gave  her the idea for her daughter to be a pianist.  She made a deal with Mr. Chong if he could give Jing-Mei lessons then she would clean his house. But he was deaf so she never really learned, only playing nonsense.
  • Then came the talent show, during her performance her mother became more  disappointed of her for doing poorly. They went home her mother saying nothing wishing she did so she can blame this on her. Years passed neither of them talking about the past, but her mother felt guilty so she gave her daughter the piano as an apologize.  Her mother passed away, looking at the piano she saw two songs. She realized how alike the two songs really were.
