Welcome to your new home, Baudelaires! Your guardians are in their penthouse!
Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire were sent to live with their new guardians Esme and Jerome Squalor in their penthouse. Mr. Poe brings them to the apartment building. In the last book, their friends Duncan and Isadora Quagmire were kidnapped by Count Olaf and the Baudelaires need to find them.
After being introduced to Jerome and Esme, the Baudelaires get a surprise. Count Olaf found them, and he is in disguise as an auctioneer. The Baudelaires try to tell their guardians about this, but they are tricked by Count Olaf's disguise!
We'll save you! Wait while we get something to break you out of the cage!
Now the Baudelaires know that the Quagmires are at this apartment building because Count Olaf is there. They try to figure out where the Quagmires are hidden, and find out that they are hidden in an empty elevator shaft. They go down the shaft, find the Quagmires, and leave to get something that will break their friends out.
The Baudelaires go back down the elevator shaft to find that the Quagmires are gone. They seek the help of their guardian, Esme, who pushes them down the shaft, but they are caught by a net. She reveals that she was in on Count Olaf's plan and the Baudelaires are now captured.
Help! We're in here!
The Baudelaires escape the trap and find out that the Quagmires are being sneaked out by getting sold to Count Olaf's crew at the auction. The Baudelaires try to bid on the item that they think the Quagmires are in, which is a box that says V.F.D. They are wrong and the Quagmires were actually in a red herring statue.
We have to find Duncan and Isadora!
Count Olaf gets away with the Quagmires again, and the Baudelaires try to go after the Quagmires. Jerome leaves them, so the Baudelaires are sent to live in a village for their new guardians. The Baudelaires need to find the Quagmires!
