  • Claudia and Matthais were still asleep. They awoke as the morning’s stillness was broken by a snuffling sound. A large form brushed against their tent and moved toward the zippered opening. The two sat bolt upright in their sleeping bags. “A bear!”
  • the bear raked its claws across Matthias’s back and legs, sending a searing flash of pain through his body. Next the bear began to bite chunks of flesh from Mathais’s left buttock and hip.
  • “What should I do?” Claudia pleaded.Concentrate! he told himself. Think calmly, and you have a chance.“ Get the first-aid kit and the thermal blanket from the packsack,” he said. He knew that he would have a better chance of surviving if he stayed warm. “Don’t bother with my head wounds. The others are more serious.” Then he told Claudia to bandage his bleeding leg and buttock.
  • She’d have to go for help alone. But first, Matthias added, she would have to bring him water from the lake to prevent his dehydrating. Claudia picked up a canteen and opened the door to head for the lake— then slammed it shut.
