During Carnival in Italy, Montresor runs into Fortunato, and offers to share a very nice bottle of Amotilliado wine with him. However this bottle is in his catacombs. It is late and Fortunato seems ill.
Montresor claims that Fortunato has gravely insulted him, and is plotting to get his revenge. He doesn't tell what Fortunato has done though, he just makes it know that whatever it was wasn't forgivable.
Montresor lures Fortunato down into the dark and eerie wine vaults, as they get farther into the vault Montresor keeps asking Fortunato if he wants to go back because he seems ill, Fortunato keeps drinking wine to ease hus cough.
When they reach there destination there is no Amontilliado, But there is a hole in the wall. Montresor Shackles Fortunato and begins to seal up the hole with bricks.
As the last few bricks are being laid, Fortunato screams at Montresor to stop but its already to late> Montresor has got his revenge.
Montresor walks away with the only sound of Fortunatos chains jingling like bells echoing in the tomb, he replaces the bones on the ground. In the end he claims that they haven't been touched in 50 years and gets away with his plot!
