Charles, Hal, and Mercedes finally half the amount of stuff they have after weeks of convincing. Mercades cries and whines over each individual piece of clothing.
Mercedes goes from caring for the dogs to being completely selfish. No matter how many times she is told to walk by her husband and brother, she refuses to walk and instead ride on the sled, adding 120 more pounds to the weight of the sled. Even with the warnings of other, more experienced, prospectors that the ice below them on the way to Dawson was surly to drop beneath them.
The family stops a John thorns camp, where the overworked dog take a short break. Once it was time to go everyone got up, except Buck. The poor dog couldn't get but but besides that he made up his mind NOT to get up. this brought upon the rath of the club.
John tackled Hal, the one yielding the club. He hissed a threat and Hal backed away, most likely knowing that by the look on this mans face, he was serious. Hal gathered up the other dogs and placed one more time at Buck, laying next to John. A thought of the warnings passed through his mind again but he shrugged it off and took off with the rest of the dogs and family.
Buck looked over his shoulder and watched the ice crack under the sled fro a spilt second before they fell through.
John sighed, a soft "I told them.." fell from his lips. this was a true lesson, only the smartest to take advice, and adapt truly make it in the end.
