France was on the verge of bankruptcy because of the lavish lifestyle the monarchy has been living in. For this reason King Louis XVI decided to call in the Estates to help him decide what to do.
Champ De Mars Massacre(July 17, 1791)
The Third Estate was enraged, because they only received one vote. The Third Estate decided to gather at the hall of versailles. But they were locked out by king Louis. They later found a local tennis court and took an oath to not seperate until the collapse of the Absolute Monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

The Bastille was a symbol of the monarchy rule, it was a prison that was much bigger than the rest of the buildings in paris. The Third Estate wanted the gunpowder inside of the prison because they didn't have enough gunpowder to use their guns, so they decided to stormed it. When the third estate successfully stormed the prison they took the leader (Bernard-René Jourdan de Launnay) and his head was put on a pike and marched around in the city.
Execution of King Louis XVI(January 23, 1793)
In wake of King Louis' failed attempt of fleeing France to the Austrian Netherlands. The revolutionaries started to protest about how the French Republic didn't abolish the Monarchy at the Champ De Mars, after a while, the protesting became much more violent and the revolutionary guards were forced to reign fire onto the revolutionaries.
The fact that King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette tried to flee to the Austrian Netherlands and the Champ De Mars inccident occured the Revolutionaries were mad so they decided to invade the Tuileries Palace where the King and his Family were forced to take refuge in the Legislative Assembly building.
The new French Republic has successfully overthrown the monarchy and wanted to remove anything that represented the old monarchy. The nearby countries were scared that the ideas of the revolution would spread to their countries and they demanded that when France was taken back it would become a monarchy with King Louis XVI at the throne. So Robespirre decided to execute King Louis XVI.
