Beowulf is showing his determination to fight off this dragon to protect his people, and he believes he is the only one that could do this. He is willing to risk his life to prove his strength.
Beowulf's men know he is struggling with the fight so they are pondering on how he chose them out of everyone. They were his men and they needed to be there for him when he needed them. SO even he thought he would fight this beast on his own, they knew they should go support his through this fight.
