David Herold helped Wilkes with his escape route to Virginia, George Azterodt was assigned by Booth to kill VP Andrew Johnson but stayed in a bar to drink instead, Lewis Powell was assigned to kill secretary of state William Seward but only injured him, all of them were tried and killed in July of 1865
On March 17, the group met in a Washington bar to plot the abduction of the president three days later. When Lincoln changed his plans their plan evolved intol killing Lincoln, VP Andrew Johnson, and secretary of state William Sewerd in the same evening.
On April 14, 1865, at about 10 p.m in the Ford's Theater, Booth walked up to the Presidents box easily because the Presidents guard, John Parker, left the play, Our American Cousin's, Booth was able to shoot Lincoln in the back of the head, Booth then jumped on the stage hurting his leg still being able to get away on his horse.
Lincoln was carried across the street to Petersen's Boarding house. Emergency medical procedures was in its infancy at the time so treating trauma like this was too much, the first doctor, Dr. Charles A. Leale. His prognosis afyer his cursory exame was that Lincoln would not recover.
In his final days, a network of conspirators helped to conceal Booth’s escape from pursuing Union soldiers. The manhunt was one of the biggest in U.S. history, involving nearly 1,000 Union soldiers. Booth eluded capture for almost 2 weeks, but on April 26, 1865, his luck finally ran out.
Lincoln remains being the best President of all time to this day.
