"Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado!
"At length I would be avenged; this was a point definitely, settled."
It is Carnival; Montresor has just ran into his quite drunk friend. He decided to get advice on an expensive wine he bought, ""...I was silly enough to pay the full Amontillado price without consulting you in the matter"(Poe,11).
Fortunato and Montresor have arrived at Montresor's humble abode," There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honour of the time"(Poe,24). Montresor knew it was a perfect time for his revenge.
Montresor led Fortunato down to the catacombs," My own fancy grew warm with the Medoc. We had passed through long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons"(Poe,51). Eventually they reach the darkest part of the catacombs, with the most nitre. The nitre could kill Fortunato due to his cold.
Montresor chained Fortunato to the walls of the catacombs. he wanted him to stay put and not able to escape. He was so drunk he couldn't tell that it wasn't a joke. H also kept asking about the wine. Eventually he realized the danger.
Montresor was building a wall when he realized the "...silence. I laid the second tier, and the third, and the fourth; and then I heard the furious vibrations of the chain"(Poe,76). Then he heard his "friend" getting scared. No one gets away with mistreating him.
As he was leaving he called ""Fortunato!"No answer still. I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within"(Poe,89). Then he walked away knowing he has accomplished his plan. For a second he felt remorse. He quickly ignored it.
