  • On May  30, 1854, Congress passed the Kansas Nebraska Act which allowed people in the Kansas Nebraska territory to choose their own slavery laws. This would contradict the Missouri Compromise which previously banned slavery up north.
  • Now States may choose themselves whether or not they would like slavery in their state
  • Stephen Douglas decided to negate the Missouri Compromise with Popular Sovereignty, not knowing what disasters it would bring
  • Let's hope this works!

  • In attempts to abolish slavery in Kansas and make it a free state, people would attempt to cross the border to vote illegally in efforts to win the vote
  • I can't stand for slaves in Kansas! I have to vote!!!
  • A town called Lawrence (Also known as The Sack of Lawrence) was founded by anti-slavery settlers. Those who lived there and supported slavery were arrested by sheriffs.  
  • The Pottawatomie Massacre was when abolitionist john brown thought that pro-slavery settlers had killed five men. In attempts to take revenge he and his followers brutally dismembered and stabbed them
  • The Massacre was a spark that started many other catastrophes, in the end around 200 people were killed
