O captain! My Captain!
O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done
Yah! We won the war! Woo Hoo!
"O captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done". This is meaning that the civil war has ended but in the poem it says that the boat has arrived back home.
Everyone is rejoicing after the win of the civil war.
Why O why has our leader passed away.
" Rise up for you the flag is flung for you the bugle trills". The Americans are thanking Lincoln for what he did while he was president.
" My captain does not answer, his lips pale and still; My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will". This shows that Lincoln has been shot and he has died.
But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my captain lies, Fallen cold and dead". Walt Whitman is very sad and mournful that Lincoln has passed away while everyone else is exulting.
