  • Winston Smith lives in Victory Mansions and works for the Ministry if Truth.  The novel begins on a cold day in April with Winston illegally writing in his diary out of sight of the tele-screens. A woman, Julia, whom Winston has only seen around the cafe, sends Winston a note that says she loves him. 
  • 
  • Julia and Winston begin a relationship unlawfully. They then begin to question the government and they start to investigate the rebellion against Big Brother. Emmanuel Goldstein is the leader of "The Brotherhood rebellion and gives Winston and Julia a book.
  • 
  • Once O'Brien gives Winston and Julia the book, they begin to stay in a room in Mr. Charrington's shop while they read it (against the law). However, the book does not help them revolt against the rebellion.
  • One night while Winston is thinking about the book that he is almost finished reading, Mr. Charrington reveals himself as a member of the Thought Police and the two are arrested and separated.
  • Winston is brought to room 101 in the Ministry of Love to be unimaginably tortured by O'Brien himself until he accepts the Party and Big Brother.
  • Theme= Totalitarianism
  • The novel comes to an end with Winston sitting in the cafe drinking victory gin. The reader is told Winston and Julia no longer have feelings for each other and Winston loves Big Brother.
