Hey in school we're learning about Psychology, do you know anything about it?
Psychology is an Outgrowth of philosophy. Psychology comes from the words "Psyche" meaning mind/soul and "Logos" the study of.
Yes, I do know somethings about Psychology. Psychology has a long past, but a short history.
The main goals of Psychology are to describe human & animal behavior, to understand human & animal behavior, to predict human & animal behavior, to influence/control human & animal behavior.
The first Psychologist is Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1910) Believed that the mind and behavior can be studied scientifically. Came up with the idea of Introspection- means to look inside yourself to see what is going on.
The third is Sigmund Freud(1856-1939). He Focused on the unconscious mind and its impact on one’s personality. Developed Psychoanalysis- treating mentally ill people by analyzing their unconscious minds. He Believed that dream analysis was key to understanding people.
The next Psychologist is William James (1842-1910) he is the first major American Psychologist. He thought the key focus was to understand how the mind functioned. Had 2 key contributions Functionalism- how the mind works and how to adapt to new experiences, Pragmatism- if an idea works, it’s valid and useful.
